Not even a hurricane could dampen the enthusiasm and excitement of the NIBA/PTDA Joint Industry Summit, which went off without a hitch at The Diplomat Beach Resort in Hollywood, Florida, September 27-30. The event was hosted just two weeks after Hurricane Irma devastated parts of South Florida. With over 1,200 delegates participating, this long-planned one-time special event will be remembered as a smashing success.

A truly joint conference between two iconic industrial distribution trade associations, the NIBA/PTDA Joint Industry Summit facilitated cross-industry and cross-channel networking, information sharing, education and fun–resulting in powerful thoughts and ideas participants will share with their teams back home. Members can access the final participation list to continue building relationships with the hundreds of industry leaders they met and worked with in Florida.
In addition to networking, the business of each association was conducted during the conference. Both NIBA and PTDA hosted independent meetings for their own committees and boards, the installation of officers and the welcoming of new members. But almost everything else about this joint conference was blended.
Hundreds of volunteers were thanked and outgoing leaders were recognized for their contributions to their association and their industry. For NIBA, that included honorary member designations for Bruce Dieleman and Harry Robb, Jr. For PTDA, that included the presentation of the prestigious Warren Pike Award to Andy Nations, B&D Industrial (Macon, Ga.)
The PTDA Foundation recognized its outgoing leaders and bestowed its highly regarded Wendy B. McDonald Award on Tribby Warfield, senior vice president, business development & strategy (EMEA) at Nitta Industries Europe GmbH. The award to celebrate her contributions to the power transmission/motion control industry as a trail blazing woman in the field.
The ICP Golf Outing was held on both 18-hole courses at the Fort Lauderdale Country Club. While the high temperature and humidity were a challenge, the outing offered members of both organizations to network informally.
Hundreds of spouse/companions joined in the fun enjoying their own networking event, daily yoga meet ups and much more. A blood drive was also organized as a way to support those injured by Hurricanes Irma, Harvey and Maria. Fifty pints of blood and five of plasma were collected by OneBlood to help restock their supply and share with those in need in Florida, Texas and Puerto Rico.
The successful format of PTDA’s IML Talks and Deeper Dives delivered relevant education to all delegates and was met with positive enthusiasm. This important educational component included exciting presentations by:
- Inspire: John O’Leary who shared seven choices you can make to ignite a radically inspired life.
- Motivate: Molly Fletcher who talked about her years as a professional sports agent and her ideas about transforming and cultivating business relationships for maximum success.
- Lead: Alan Beaulieu who enlightened participants on what the economy of 2018 may bring and what to do to prepare now, based on his predictions which have been 94.7 percent accurate.
The crowning event of the NIBA/PTDA Joint Industry Summit was the Joint MD-IDEX/Expo, a powerful networking program that blended the best of the two association’s signature member-to-member networking formats. The Joint MD-IDEX/Expo featured over 200 exhibitor booths and coordinated over 835 formal fast-networking meetings between distributors and manufacturer exhibitors and countless informal meetings.
To celebrate a successful few days in Florida, participants were treated to a Joint Closing Reception and Dinner: Havana Nights, complete with Cuban wear, fedoras galore, fabulous food and a memorable photo booth to share fun pictures with family and friends.

The NIBA/PTDA Joint Industry Summit is now in the books as one of the most successful events of all time for both NIBA and PTDA. And, while there are no plans at this time for a future joint conference, you can certainly plan ahead for each association’s next annual meeting:
